Reason #138 for ice cream

"My foots are getting sleepy, and I need ice cream to wake them up."

Yes, he's pointing at his feet, and he was being completely rational about his request.

I *love* having a 3-year-old!

And, to keep this post on topic -- our choices for ice cream are pretty limited. Soy ice cream is the easiest to get, but I do prefer the rice dream ice cream because I don't want the kids to get too much soy in their diet. (Here's why, if you're wondering.)

I'm not sure if it's playing russian roulette, especially given my last post, but we do let them have ice cream with the "manufactured on equipment" warning on it. I haven't found ice cream yet without that warning, and making our own ice cream is pretty daunting.

Edited post to add: We're not just nut-free, but dairy-free too. Home-made dairy-free ice cream recipes would be welcome! I do have an ice cream maker. Now there's an idea for an allergy cookbook — tasty ice cream recipes with dairy-free, egg-free alternatives!

We make ice cream at our house using the Cuisinart Ice Cream maker...it's actually not that bad. It came with a bunch of recipes and takes about 30 minutes to make, then 30 minutes in the freezer. At first it's a bit soft, but hardens up the longer it's in the freezer. Might be worth a shot - then you really know what's in it. =)

Here's a vegan ice cream recipe from the Post Punk Kitchen. I haven't tried this particular recipe (no ice cream maker) but the reviews are good.

I tried this recipe this summer and my kids loved it, and it used up my partial bags of sticky marshmallow blobs. Don't get the book Vice Cream. Dairy and egg-free for the vegans, but uses CUPS of cashews in every recipe to make everything "creamy"

I can't help with the ice cream thing, but I do worry about too much soy as well. I have heard about possible links to cancer. My eldest was raised on soy formula and now they eat a fair amount fo soy nut butter. In a peanut free home, what else can you do?

When my 5 year old was allergic to dairy, his grandma took frozen strawberries and fresh bananas and put them through her juicer. All the adults would have birthday cake and ice cream and the grandkids always wanted "grandmas ice cream" No dairy! He never felt excluded or that he was having something less.
The more banana's-the creamier. But the proportions were never the same. You could experiment.

As I said, my son WAS allergic to dairy. He isn't after I found a doctor at www.naet.com Check it out or at least one of the books there. He had two $50 treatments (costing me 30 total with our ins.) and she tested him no longer allergic. His symptoms have not returned!
It took me a year before I tried it; I'm glad I finally did. Over 50+ friends and family have gone to our doctor and have had the same results. No joke. I'm just a SAHM, with no agenda. Just know it helped me and might help others.

I don't have an ice cream maker so I've never tried making ice cream, but this is a blog-friend of mine and her ice cream recipes always look so good to me! The flavors are a little sophisticated...coffee, green tea, and toasted black sesame seed...but I think she can give you a good base recipe to make any flavor from. Here is the url for her toasted sesame ice cream.

My five year old son just loves mango lime sorbet and is constantly asking me to buy mangos at the grocery store so I can make it again.

I saw the previous comment about NAET, and feel like I should point out this article to you:

I'm not trying to start a ruckus in your comments thread, but the claims about nonmedical "cures" scare me no end.

Don't worry about causing a ruckus --
I've heard all sorts of things about NAET, and won't be trying it out on my kids because it's unproven. (As one sig I read once says, "the plural of anecdote is not data." There are lots of anecdotes, but no solid data.)
